White People Stole My Car

Posted by Dario On September - 1 - 2009

white-people-stole-my-carIf you’ve spent some time on Google trying to figure out why ‘white people stole my car‘ is one of the fastest-rising search terms on Google Trends today, you’ve probably come away mystified. You’ve also probably downloaded about sixteen computer viruses, as the malware spammers that leech off Google Trends have jumped on the term in a big way.

Luckily, I spent time to figure it all out for you, so you don’t have to. Don’t thank me, this is why I went to college.

Spoiler Alert: it’s because Internet users are kind of racist! You see, there’s a popular email being passed around with a picture showing a Google search for “white people stole my car.” Underneath, it shows “Did you mean: “black people stole my car.”

The joke, you see, is that Google would replace the term “black” for “white.” We do not approve, and for what it’s worth, that no longer happens if you type the term into Google. In fact, it may have never happened at all.

Internet, sometimes you just really need to take a time out and think about what you’ve done. (What you’ve done is be terrible.)  My girlfriend’s grandmother already thinks that the internet is the devil and I think Google has just confirmed that for her :) ….

New President….New Google Bombs!

Posted by Dario On January - 26 - 2009

So we all thought that the Google Bombs against our Commander and Chief were over. Well we were all mistaken. President Obama has not even crescent the White House thrown yet and has already been bombed by the blogger sphere.

I was on Twitter last week when someone posted the search results of the term “Failure”. We are all aware of what happened back in 2004 to our former Commander and Chief, he was Google bombed and decided to go and bomb Iraq; Google has denied any involvement in that invasion!

So what causes Google Bombs and why can’t they be stopped. The answer is simple; it’s in the ALGO. Unless Google makes some major changes to their algorithm, this will continue to happen. Now in all fairness, it does take a mass amount of users to complete a Google bomb, but, as we know, it is very much possible. On my birthday last year (Jan 25th) Matt Cutts gave his definition of Google bombs and Google’s solution to the problem.

We wanted to give a quick update about “Googlebombs.” By improving our analysis of the link structure of the web, Google has begun minimizing the impact of many Googlebombs. Now we will typically return commentary, discussions, and articles about the Googlebombs instead. The actual scale of this change is pretty small (there are under a hundred well-known Googlebombs), but if you’d like to get more details about this topic, read on.

dect_6.0We’ve certainly seen some fairly interesting dedicated handset buttons before, but it’s hard to argue with the functionality of a standalone GOOG-411 key. Apparently, Thomson has teamed up with Google to integrate the “first ever one-touch, auto-dial GOOG-411 button” into over a dozen of its GE-branded DECT 6.0 phones. In case you’ve been chilling under a stone of late, GOOG-411 is the search giant’s “free, voice-activated, business directory assistance service,” and it will be within reach on a slew of April-bound home phones. Each phone can use one of 20 ringtones, plus a special VIP Melody — a separate ringtone to use when that special someone calls (note: requires Caller ID). The handsets each have a dedicated headset jack, so you can plug in a headset for those long calls, and still enjoy the mobility of a cordless phone. The handsets are extremely light, and very comfortable to hold. The DECT 6.0 technology makes the wireless transmission virtually static free, and provides a very long range.

Goog-411. Google You Are Everywhere!

Posted by Dario On January - 9 - 2009

goog411

I was trolling the web today and came across GOOG411 on Twitter. With the inventions of services like GOOG411, Skype, Vonage and MetroPCS I think cell carries are losing the battle to continue to charge consumers by the minute for air time, hefty cancellation penalties and the age old “free nights and weekends” plans.

About GOOG-411
Google’s new 411 service is free, fast and easy to use. Give it a try now and see how simple it is to find and connect with local businesses for free. (*)
